What was the Main Reason for the French Revolution?
Although there are many good reasons for the French Revolution we believe there is one reason in particular that is responsible. The real reason for the French Revolution had been brewing for awhile and that was the enormous amount of national debt France had acquired. This debt kept piling up because of the lavish lifestyle of the higher classes and the amount of wars that the French participated in that they could not afford.
On May 5th 1789, when the debt had become too much, there was a decision that had to be made of how they would solve this problem. The solution they came up with was to tax one of the classes of France. But who would be the unlucky victims? None other than the poorest people; the 3rd class citizens. These taxes ,that were forced on them, enraged the lowly citizens of France and led to a string of events like the Tennis Court oath, the storming of Bastille and many more. This series of events is otherwise known as the French Revolution.
This national debt should've been taken care of sooner and not handled the way it was. France was a nation of haves and have not. The government, clergy and nobles had an excess of money even with the luxury they lived in while anyone else (3rd class) had barely enough money to buy two loaves of bread for daily food. These nobles ,who had money to burn, avoided all the taxes to pay for the national debt that they had helped rack up and made the poorest people pay them. It used to be that nobles were chivalrous and courteous but that is not the case here.
